The workshop, "Teach Your Children Well: Preventing Childhood Sexual Abuse," is part of an ongoing series of seminars for parents called Empowering Parents and will be held Thursday.
"Scottsdale Healthcare is committed to the well-being of our community. We feel it's essential to educate parents on the best way to prevent sexual abuse and to be aware of the warning signs," said nurse practitioner April Bramini, who helped organize the seminar.
Forensic nurse examiner Kim Yedowitz, a workshop presenter, will discuss the warning signs of potential abuse and ways parents can communicate with their children to help them avoid or get help in abusive situations.
Yedowitz, a public educator and former emergency nurse, manages Scottsdale Healthcare's forensic nurse unit, the only program of its kind in Arizona.
Working with county attorneys and city police, the unit provides care and forensic services for sex-crime victims at five locations in Maricopa County.
Parents are generally diligent when educating their children to "stranger danger," but the vast majority of sexual-abuse crimes are perpetrated by someone the child knows, according to forensic experts.
