The woman later told police she persuaded Street to untie her so she could go to the bathroom, then distracted him by asking for a cigarette. She then fled into the woods and walked between 12 and 18 miles for help. The investigation into her disappearance began when Street reported her missing to Whitefish police. Officers were suspicious of his story.
